Sarah Kay, a famous poet known for her spoken word, suggests doing an exercise when you feel a little lost in the heaviness of life. She says to write down "three things that I know to be true" in order to be guided back to reality a little bit. This is an exercise she uses for poetry students in order to get their creative juices cranking and to show how these three things can show a commonality throughout the human race. No matter what you write or feel, most of the time we can trust that someone can relate to at least a few.
So, I am nearing the end of my junior year of college. That means one and a half more years until I am officially a college graduate with a bachelor's degree with my bright eyes looking toward a medical school. This thought fills my bones with anxiety and a shivering fear of the unknown, yet a weird sense of excitement. As I walk through my day-to-day life, my overly emotional self is consistantly analyzing what is headed my way. Often times, I focus so hard on the future that I forget about what is going on now. What a travesty to be so fixated on things that are so far out of reach that I forget about the small things that occur on a minute to minute basis. This is something that I set as a "New Year's Resolution" annually, yet by mid-year my success looks something like a clumsy person trying to do a skateboard trick. With my scraped knees and heavy heart, I am forcing myself to focus on ten things that I know to be true (rather than 3 because I feel like a hot-mess).
1. Jesus loves me so much. To no end. To no limit. He loves me.
2. I have been comparing myself to a perfect image of Selina that I have created, when in reality it is not something I should try to attain.
3. Genetics is not an easy subject. Neither is chemistry or physics. But, I am enthralled by all three.
4. I miss my papa and want to be with my grama.
5. I feel confused. Confused about some things that I should (maybe) not have allowed myself to become confused about, but here we are.
6. I have wonderful family and friends. I don't give them enough credit for being as great as they are.
7. Outrageously blessed is the only way I know how to explain my life. Regardless of anything that comes my way, I know I am blessed.
8. I love my job. However frustrating it can get, it's a super cool oppourtunity that I still can't believe that I got.
9. I love my school. In my biased opinion, I have some of the sharpest professors in the country. I am so thankful for the education I am allowed to recieve.
10. I miss my babies in CANICA. I wish I were snuggled up to them right now.
Ten small things I know to be true.
With 5 minutes to spare before starting the new day, I am hoping that tomorrow 10 more things will come to mind. With that hope, I want to focus on the now. As confusing and weird the "now" may seem, it deserves my 120% attention.
I am not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But, I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wonderously reached out for me. Friends, don't get me wrong; by no means do I count myseld an expert in all of this, but I have got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward - to Jesus. I am off and I am running, there's no turning back. Philippians 3:12
